Session Type: Symposium
This symposium presents four studies on gender and masculinities that explore the complex ways adolescent male students negotiate and resist discourses and ideologies regarding gender, race, language, and literacy. Four emergent scholars, together with the chair and discussant, welcome members to an interactive presentation and discussion of diverse qualitative and mixed methods research of adolescent male literacies. The research illuminates the ways these ideologies may be internalized or challenged by young men as they work to understand themselves as individuals in the social and academic worlds they inhabit. Findings from these studies challenge simplistic notions of how young men understand and respond to the power and privilege inherent in a male identity within a patriarchal white supremacist culture.
