Abstract

This symposium examines the challenges of parental engagement in rural contexts as a way to transcend the limitations of historically marginalized populations of color. Using mixed methods, presenters explore dominant and non-dominant forms of parent involvement and engagement in a context of rural education. The studies exemplify the various approaches, practices, and strategies that parents employ to be actively involved in supporting their child’s education. Additionally, these studies help support and validate parental efforts that are often overseen in traditional models of family engagement. Presenters will discuss culturally sensitive approaches that can help strengthen collaborations among those engaged in school-community partnerships to help support Mexican-origin, (im)migrant parents as well as re-conceptualize what it means to engage parents in educational policy.
