58.018 - Market-Based Teacher Accountability Policies and Practices: Global Perspectives and Critiques

Abstract

Representing five regional contexts, this symposium brings together a group of international scholars who are studying market-based teacher accountability policies and mechanisms in different contexts, across various scales, and from different theoretical and methodological perspectives. With a focus on quality performance indicators (e.g., value-added measures (VAMs)) and quality performance incentives (e.g., performance-based pay), these researchers explore the historical, social, and political backdrops of these technologies and their implications for education systems, practices, policies, and individuals. The panelists will adopt critical, global, and comparative perspectives on such policies to explore how market logics are conditioning the possibilities for such practices to not only exist, but to proliferate, globally. They will also discuss the related implications for policy, practice, and research.
