Session Type: Symposium
The world has been exposed a great deal to “low” educational and social outcomes of young Black and Latino males through media and one-sided portrayals of them. Sadly, the public murders of Michael Brown, Oscar Ramirez, and other Black and Latino males have exacerbated the perspective of these young men as violent, endangered, at risk, and hopeless. As a response, this session presents an empirical study that examines how the home, school, and community of high achieving Black and Latino males in Los Angeles County guide and support their success. We aim to share a more holistic story that accounts for the overlooked resilience and success of these young men.
