Session Summary

58.049 - Routes to Teaching Certification in Texas and Beyond

Sun, April 30, 4:05 to 6:05pm, Grand Hyatt San Antonio, Floor: Second Floor, Lone Star Ballroom Salon A

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

The proliferation of alternative teacher certification routes has surged in recent years, particularly in historically underserved communities. This trend is likely to continue due to an ESSA provision that reduces restrictions for authorizing “teacher preparation academies”. This moderated discussion features panelists representing various perspectives on current teacher certification routes, in Texas and beyond. The discussion will address: college and university programs; alternative programs within Institutions of Higher Learning (IHEs); alternative non-IHE programs that do their own preparation or that subcontract preparation to colleges/universities or independent programs; Teacher Residencies involving partnerships between universities and school districts; and Grow-your Own, community-based programs. The session aims to cultivate democratic dialogue, focusing especially on the implications of teacher education’s changing landscape for educational equity.
