41.039 - Protest, Progress, and 2 Fists Up: Examining the Impact of Mizzou's Concerned Student 1950 on Higher Education

Abstract

Racially minoritized students, and their allies at more than 70 higher education institutions across the country are demanding an end to systemic and structural racism on their campuses. Their efforts situate higher education as a pedagogical site for political struggle. While every voice and body placed on the line matters, those aligned with Concerned Student 1950 at the University of Missouri have been documented in national media. In Spring 2016, Spike Lee released the documentary 2 Fist Up, tracing the racial unrest at the University of Missouri and the administration’s response to Concerned Student 1950’s demand for the resignation of President Tim Wolfe. This session will feature a viewing of the documentary and a discussion of Concerned Student 1950’s impact.
