Session Type: Roundtable Session
This session explores research possibilities and predicaments in environmental education presented by an emerging ecological turn in diverse but related fields concerned with the relationship between language, meaning and understanding (i.e. hermeneutics, linguistics, semiotics). We are interested in such conceptual frameworks for they suggest, to varying degrees, that the capacity to make meaning, to be communicative, to employ language, and to exert agency extend beyond the limited boundaries of the human. Each paper in the session draws from different fields and varied ontological presuppositions, and we are collectively interested in how humans signify, interpret and otherwise interact with other-than-human beings and processes, and with diverse ecological, social, material, political and phenomenological implications.
