25.005 - An Informal Conversation on Racial Conciliation and the Role of Education and Schooling

Abstract

Within America, race is a social construct that has created its own reality within education systems. This in-depth conversation is designed to foster a dialogue that raises critical questions around issues of racial conciliation and the role of education and schooling. In Pedagogy of the Oppressed, Paulo Freire states "true reflection leads to action.” As emerging scholars within the GSC, what steps can we take to reflect on the implicit biases we may harbor around sensitive issues of race and education equity? As we position ourselves into spheres of influence through our research and teaching, having an awareness of the implicit biases we carry can assist us in becoming more objective in the researchers, scholars and teachers.
