30.081-9 - Student Choice in Homework: Findings From a Montessori Charter Classroom

Fri, April 28, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Street Level, Stars at Night Ballroom 4

Session Type: Poster Session

Abstract

Homework is a controversial topic in education: what types of homework to give, how much, and how often? The American Montessori Society has no guidelines for homework practices, leaving schools to decide on homework assignments. Dissatisfied with how traditional homework did not align with Montessori practices, Ocean Montessori School abandoned traditional homework in the 2016-2017 academic year. Students were allowed choices in homework and how to share this work with their class. This study followed the students in one classroom to see what types of work students selected, how they chose to present the homework, and why. In addition, Montessori teachers across the state were surveyed to determine their homework practices and thoughts towards homework assignments in the Montessori classroom.
