This symposium highlights the promise of combining social science research with public advocacy to promote more socially just educational opportunities for all students in diverse schools. This symposium will include four paper presentations based upon data from research on schools and communities undergoing demographic changes, including three schools in urban areas of gentrification and two formerly all-white suburbs with increasing numbers of Black and Latino student. The participants will present findings that speak to the theme of the AERA annual meeting: “Knowledge to Action.” The goal of the symposium is to engage in a dialogue with AERA members about Action Research that puts research to garner meaning making about race before the “action,” which is school and community engagement to support and sustain socially just diverse public schools.
