29.011 - Global Migration, Diversity, and Civic Education

Fri, April 28, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: Ballroom Level, Room 301 C

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

People in nations around the world are acknowledging their multiple identities and commitments and working to incorporate them into their countries’ national identities. This quest to acknowledge and expand the focus, goals, and content of citizenship education to close the gap between democratic ideals and educational practices will be conceptualized in this session as the citizenship education dilemma. Understanding citizenship education in this age of globalization and mass migration is deeply connected to advancing educational opportunity. This Presidential Session centers on the ways in which these goals of citizenship education are being seriously challenged by global immigration, and the quest by racial, ethnic, cultural, and indigenous groups for recognition and civic equality. Panelists discuss the education implications of and the relationship among concepts such as immigration, cultural sustainability, and social cohesion.
