Session Summary

54.036 - Decolonizing the Ivory Tower: Experiences From Recently Conferred Scholars

Sun, April 30, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, Floor: River Level, Room 4

Session Type: Invited Speaker Session

Abstract

There is so much to learn from recently conferred scholars in the academy. Though their successes, challenges, and experiences vary widely on an individual basis, collectively, their perspectives paint a clear picture of the ups, downs, and plateaus of transitioning from the requirements of graduate students to the responsibilities of scholars to their research and communities. Attending this graduate student session will provide access to the insight of scholars whose degrees were conferred in the last four years. During both a panel discussion, and quick but meaningful “speed mentoring” sessions, newly minted scholars will offer feedback to graduate students about what they can expect to encounter, and the numerous ways they can make the most of each part of their transition into their next role.
