Abstract

This symposium brings together scholars from Brazil, Argentina, Mexico, and the U.S. with the aim of discussing how public policies have been analysed in the Americas over the last 25 years. In the wave of democratization and modernization, education policies have been modified substantially in order to ensure more opportunities for the under privileged. However, large-scale evaluations and some research evidence have suggested that learning and social gaps between rich and poor are still expanding. This calls to question the way in which some democratic-elected governments and societies work together to address social problems. Have political and ideological pluralism been useful in developing more effective and equitable policies? Is it true that we are moving from a traditional government to governance? Has democracy in the Americas been useful for developing renovative public policy frameworks? What lessons can be drawn from the political and economic changes in terms of analytical perspectives and educational development? By discussing theoretical approaches and practical applications in the field of education policy, this symposium will try to address such questions.
