58.015 - CANCELLED: Diversity and the Neoconservative Agenda in Educational Policies: Achievements at Risk

Abstract

Across the American continent, there is a recent history of addressing diversity in educational systems. Mobilized by social struggles in defense of human rights, the access to, remaining in school and success of minorities and those excluded from school was and still remains a priority challenge in the democratic educational agenda. With the economic advances and the political stability achieved in the region, compensatory educational policies and of differentiation were strategies used by governments to address these issues. These initiatives were not enough to counteract conservative political forces pushing for educational policies that meet their interests. In this session, we aim to discuss the pressures and strains that the educational policies directed towards diversity have undergone with this agenda which some scholars call neoconservative.
