Higher Education in the Americas: Balance and Prospects for Transformation—1997–2017

Abstract

Higher education in the world and also in the Americas has been a field of intense transformations for more than two decades. An enormous growth in access is also associated with qualitative changes in differentiation and organizational models, public-private balance, service to the environment and cultural diversity, regulatory frameworks, quality assurance, regionalism and integration, virtual education, critical perspectives, innovation and internationalization. And it may just be the beginning of the road. In addition, the transformation manifests itself asymmetrically with respect to the social meaning of knowledge. The Latin America and the Caribbean area has indicators of expenditure on science, technology, and innovation, on scientific production and patents that are below those of other regions. The panel intends to work to obtain a synthetic vision and a provisional balance of the changes and their perspectives
