The aim of the symposium is to consider salient county and international indicators of education research as a field. To date, there are only limited data systematically collected within or across countries. Also, indicators related to education research as a field and profession vary considerably within and across countries in what is measured and how. Only in recent years has there been a growing interest in the development, design, and systematic collection of information, including in such areas as (1) doctoral degree production, (2) R&D investment in support for education research, (3) the scope and impact of publication, (4) the organizational infrastructure of the field (e.g., research associations and organizations), and (5) the size of the workforce and relevant employment sectors. This symposium, with participants from the OECD, from Europe (Germany and Poland), and from the Americas (Mexico and the United States) will seek to address (1) what is available, (2) what is known, (3) what governmental or other entities should take a leadership role in collecting such data, and (4) what strategies might yield robust indicators in an era when resources are scarce for the acquisition of such information.
