Measuring Intrapersonal Factors Influencing Speaking Up in the Operating Room

Sat, April 14, 8:15 to 9:45am, The Parker, Floor: Third Floor, Azekka Room

Abstract

This paper reports on a development of a scale to measure intrapersonal factors influencing speaking up behavior in the operating room. A total of 81 anesthesia residents (60) and attendings (21) participated in the study. Exploratory factor analysis indicated three-factor solution accounting for 73% of the variance. The final scale included 10 items and was found to be reliable (α = .83). The self-efficacy sub-scale included four items (α = .86), whereas the social outcome expectations (α = .86) and assertive attitude (α = .67) sub-scales had three items each. One-way ANOVAs showed that the effect of training level was significant on the self-efficacy, and assertive attitude composite scores, but not statistically significant on the social outcome expectations scores.
