Mon, April 16, 12:25 to 1:55pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 4

Abstract

The quality of relationship between chairperson and doctoral student is so important that it may determine students' decisions to complete the program. The purpose of this study is to develop valid and reliable measurement instruments to gather faculty and students’ experiences and opinions regarding salient chairperson practices in an online doctoral program, as perceived by chairpersons and students. Data were collected from dissertation chairs (N=127) and doctoral students (N=168) attending in an online doctoral program during February-March 2017. Data were analyzed using exploratory factor analysis and Cronbach’s Alpha. Five factors were extracted for both student (50 items) and faculty (46 items) questionnaires; Career and Scholarship mentorship, Institutional policies and procedures, Motivation, Feedback, and Communication. Overall Cronbach alpha was .93.
