This paper presentation examines the work of Gregory Palamas, Christian saint and scholar (1296-1359) with respect to education and multiple ways of knowing. It situates this work within the broader context of the Byzantine world in the early 14th century. This context is framed by political tensions between Orthodoxy and Catholicism, by linguistic challenges between Greek and Latin, and by a multicultural and multiethnic diversity that occupied the Byzantine world in its last century of existence. Within a century of Palamas’ death, Byzantium would be no more, succumbing to Ottoman imperial expansion following the collapse of Constantinople in 1453.
