In this paper, we discuss 7 years of research from an innovative Australian Initial Teacher Education program. Developed against the backdrop of contested quality teacher discourses, the rise of alternative teacher education pathways such as Teach for Australia and the ‘disappearance’ of social justice curriculum in crowded Initial Teacher Education curriculum, XXX was designed as a mainstream ITE program to prepare teachers to understand the impact of poverty and disadvantage and to encourage participants to choose careers in high poverty schools. This paper reports on the impact of this long-running program on pre-service teachers, graduate teachers and schools as well as how the program contributes both to new theory and practice related to teacher education in high-poverty schools.
