Family- and Community-Engaged Teaching for Systems Change

Mon, April 16, 12:25 to 1:55pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 4

Abstract

This paper presents the development and challenges involved in a family and community engagement focus of a larger school-university partnership. The case study details efforts to support a school to understand and use family knowledge in mutually meaningful, and co-designed family engagement efforts over time. The impact on teacher, teacher-candidate and university faculty understanding of family engagement in a high poverty, majority Latino, rural elementary school is explored. The account details home and family visiting (Roggman, Boyce, & Innocenti, 2008), navigating systems and interprofessional collaboration (Mellin, Belknap, Brodie, & Sholes, 2015), as supportive of teacher and faculty professional development in family-school engagement processes in low income communities of color (Murrell, 2001).
