We examined the characteristics of literacy teaching in rural Sierra Leone and identify reforms for improving its teaching. Using a case study method, we observed 40 lessons in seven different rural schools, participated in discussions with teachers, principals, and parents, and composed field notes when teaching a literacy methods curriculum with literacy coaches who were mentoring rural teachers. Findings revealed many strengths in rural classroom teaching, including that of having teachers who were motivated and skilled at managing large groups of children. Yet rural teachers often lacked backgrounds in methods of how to teach reading. The literacy coaches identified the importance of increasing the number of certified teachers in the schools and improving the government’s attention to rural education.
