Selecting a College Environment: Perceptions of a Deaf Student—A Case Study

Sat, April 14, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the factors that influence college choice for a student who is deaf. Literature explores college satisfaction, but little is written about the perceptions of a high school student going through the college search and the unique needs that deafness may present. This study examines decisions of a high school junior from a public mainstream program for her academic career as she considers her post-secondary options. Through qualitative inquiry via interview paired with data collected via questionnaire, themes related to community, comfort and culture emerged. This study offers insight into skills and guidance for students who are deaf or hard of hearing as they transition to postsecondary experiences.
