Degrees of Success? Midterm Impacts of the Florida College and Career Readiness Initiative

Abstract

The Florida College and Career Readiness Initiative (FCCRI) was a statewide policy requiring college readiness testing and participation in college readiness and success (CRS) courses for high school students. We used regression discontinuity to compare outcomes within the first two years of on-time college enrollment for students scoring just above and below test score cutoffs for assignment to FCCRI. We find that as students exempted from CRS courses may enroll in more rigorous courses, CRS courses may be as effective as more rigorous courses in preparing narrowly targeted students for college. We conclude with implications for researchers and policymakers to consider for similar programs in other states.
