Mentoring for All: Building a Community of Knowledge for Preservice Mentors and Teacher Candidates

Sun, April 15, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Empire Ballroom East

Abstract

This study extends our previously-conducted qualitative research investigating support and professional learning communities for pre-service mentors. Through experiences in a Ministry-sponsored program, known in Ontario as the New Teacher Induction Program (NTIP) and a university-based Faculty of Education practicum, the authors continue to deepen their understanding of the value of professional learning about mentoring and the conditions that foster communities. Given that pre-service mentors are not offered the same level of support as their induction mentor counterparts, our two-year study continues to explore this gap by uniting NTIP mentors and small groups of pre-service mentors in a two-day professional learning opportunity. In the second year, we have deepened our understanding, expanded our research methodology and explored new emerging themes.
