Systematic Review of the Simple View of Reading: The Trends on Sample, Research Design, and Methodology

Abstract

The Simple View of Reading (SVR; Gough and Tunmer, 1986) proposed that reading comprehension (RC) is equal to the product of decoding (D) and linguistic comprehension (LC). Since 1986, many researchers have endeavored to validate or expand this model. The current paper systematically reviewed the samples, model specifications, and experimental designs of 60 SVR validation studies. Our analysis found 92% of the study maintained both D and LC in their final model. Additionally, 62% found that D and LC are not the only independent variables. However, inconsistencies of research design and methodological properties make generalizations difficult. Our findings suggests trends and potential future focus of SVR research.
