Abstract

Italy is considered to have one of the best models of inclusion in Europe. This study investigated the process of inclusion through policy and practice in K-12 school settings for students with disabilities in Italy. The inclusion model in Italy is framed in the normalization principle, which states that all individuals, regardless of disabilities, have the right to live a normal life in mainstream society. In this study, inclusion policy in Italy is synthesized to pinpoint the goals and guidelines that reflect Italy’s vision for inclusion. Research results describe inclusion programs, challenges, and current outcomes in Italy. Additionally, this study describes perspectives of stakeholders that demonstrate the close relationship between inclusion policy and actual practice in Italy.
