Abstract

The Harkness Method is a discussion-based pedagogical approach central to daily life at Harkness Academy intended to foster students’ academic and character development. Yet, little is known about the role of the Harkness Method in fostering students’ character. This study used a mixed-methods approach employing longitudinal surveys, teacher and student interviews, and field notes to investigate the role of Harkness in fostering students’ social-responsibility and open-mindedness (civic and intellectual character strengths, respectively). Preliminary qualitative results show students attribute elements of Harkness discussion as contributing to their development of open-mindedness and social responsibility. Preliminary quantitative results suggest that social-responsibility declines across the school year indicating that students may need additional outlets beyond the classroom for their burgeoning social responsibility.
