This empirical study investigated how preschool-aged children develop digital literacy when using media and technology, i.e., iPads. Digital literacy can be difficult to teach and learn, especially in early childhood education (ECE). Grounded in constructivist learning theory, this research uses a design-based research case study. This paper focuses on one scenario with preschool-aged children (n=3), aged 4, and one teacher. Children used iPads to make, create, produce, and explore a variety of apps. Data were analyzed using qualitative open-thematic coding methods. The results indicated that children developed digital literacy skills on iPads. The study’s findings underscore the importance of exploring the role of digital devices, such as iPads, and the development of digital literacy in ECE.
