Training for Preservice Educators and Policy Implications Surrounding the Increasing Rates of Educator Sexual Misconduct

Fri, April 13, 4:05 to 6:05pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Concourse Level, Concourse F Room

Abstract

As litigation continues to address unethical and unlawful behavior regarding teacher/student relationships, there is a growing need to examine pre-service legal and ethical teacher preparation programs and professional development for current teachers regarding this sensitive issue. This phenomenological study examines the impact of educator sexual misconduct through the words of the campus principal from the initial allegation, through the investigation, and the resulting collateral damage to the school community. The participants describe the legal, ethical, policy, and practical issues they faced when confronted with the challenges created by an educator’s illegal act.
This paper includes: case analysis, results of current research, evolving policies, and recommendations for preparation programs and professional development to address a significant problem in our nation’s schools.
