Monocratic Masculinity as Hegemonic in the Age of Trump and Its Implications for English Language Arts Instruction

Mon, April 16, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Sheraton New York Times Square, Floor: Second Floor, Metropolitan East Room

Abstract

The election of Donald Trump undermines previously held conceptions of masculinity as supporting egalitarian inclusion and acceptance, and proclaims a different masculinity whose characteristics align with misogyny, solipsism, isolationism, and intimidation. Amidst this shifting climate we wonder what implications exist for the field of masculinities. Hence, we are compelled to ask, what type of masculinity does Donald Trump exhibit? How can classroom practices respond to this type of masculinity? In order to explore these important questions, this paper performs a discourse analysis of a purposeful sample of Donald Trump’s tweets to uncover how they intersect with the field of masculinities, and their implications for classroom instruction.
