The Emergent Multiphase Design: Using Mixed Methods Research to Consider the Status of English

Sun, April 15, 8:15 to 9:35am, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Eighth Floor, Manhattan Ballroom

Abstract

This paper aims to present the emergent multiphase design as a way of conducting robust longitudinal mixed methods research (MMR). This design is applied to analyse adolescents’ use of English in Norway. Norwegians are among the most proficient L2 speakers of English, although English does not have the status of being a second language and has traditionally been regarded as a foreign language. One aspect of the status of English in Norway, concerns reading comprehension in English compared to Norwegian as the L1. The main contribution of this paper arises from discussing how the emergent multiphase design adds value to reading research projects.
