Developing a Tiered Mentoring Model for Course-Based Research Experiences

Abstract

As undergraduate institutions rely more heavily on teaching assistants (TAs) they are simultaneously encouraging implementation of course-based research experiences (CBREs). Due to the dynamic nature of CBREs it is difficult to assign novice TAs to instruct these types of classes. The researchers in this study have experience training TAs assigned to undergraduate biology courses. In response to their experiences, a model was developed and implemented employing the researchers as TA instructors, undergraduate students as TAs, and high school students as mentees. This qualitative study describes the course design, the teaching philosophies of the researchers, and the reflections of the undergraduate TAs. Findings from this study may help to develop a tiered model for TA training to benefit undergraduate CBREs.
