Leadership for Humanizing Education: School-Wide Inclusion for Students of Color With Emotional and Behavioral Disabilities

Fri, April 13, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Park Central Hotel New York, Floor: Ballroom Level, Forum

Abstract

This study examined how leadership and schoolwide routines attempted to construct space for humanizing education for students of color with EBD. After a thick description of the school community and how its values are lived and challenged daily, I describe the specific roles of school leadership in a sustained model of inclusion that is humanizing and humane. While numerous studies have begun to articulate humanizing pedagogy as centered in teacher beliefs and practices, humanizing education empowers students through individual and collective healing and liberation. This study seeks to redefine what special education “inclusion” means in humanizing terms across an entire school, with a critical eye toward the complexities of chasing a such a dream.
