Visualization as a multi-modal process is widely explored in curriculum studies. I conducted a thirteen-month ethnography of a research university’s Image Lab (IL) to examine moment-to-moment agency as adults figure out how to take preschoolers’ lead in picture-making activities.
My research draws upon Holland and colleagues’ (1998) notion of figured worlds, or the socially and culturally constructed realm of interpretation whereby a person’s sense of themselves as an agent emerges in particular events. My ethnographic methods featured picture-making processes to generate, analyze, and represent data. This paper presents one of my findings. I discuss how adults became vulnerable while with preschoolers so as to re-imagine agency and reconsider what counts as drawing.
