This study reports preliminary findings of an ethnographic study of English language learners (ELs) learning mathematics in a Northern California metropolitan high school with a new curriculum guided by the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). The researcher asks how language learning is played out in the official curriculum, and how the focal Chinese-speaking ELs responded to the new instructional dynamics. The study aims to better articulate and theorize the pedagogical challenges and resources in content-area classrooms for ELs.
