Community Housing Organizations Matter in the Cultivation of Educational Opportunity: A New Perspective on Education Reform

Tue, April 17, 8:15 to 9:45am, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

In the last decade the number of families struggling to afford housing has grown rapidly throughout the United States. Despite the widespread urgency of this issue, there is an absence of scholarship in educational research about how affordable housing policy and programs affect students’ educational opportunity. In this case study, I propose that Community Development Corporations (CDCs) are under-researched organizations that offer important insights into the relationship between housing and educational opportunity. Ultimately, this study aims to inform how school and community based actors can capitalize on the “education potentials” of CDCs.
