College Impact on Student Self-Understanding: Engagement in Race/Ethnicity-Based Activities

Abstract

Self-understanding is a continuous developmental process that takes shape throughout an individual’s life. Using the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) dataset, particularly the Freshman Survey and the College Senior Survey, this study addresses the relationship between specific racial and ethnicity related activities and behaviors that impact self-understanding in college students. Based on the findings from the regression analysis conducted in this study, the type of student who benefits the most are those who identify as White, those who identify as Mixed Race and males. Implications and considerations for future research are also discussed.
