Mathematics apps on touch-screen devices have become popular as effective tools to support mathematics learning. Many apps incorporate gaming elements such as points, stars, coins, or storylines to increase student interest and motivation. This mixed methods study explores the effects of mathematics and gaming elements in three game-based mathematics apps on 53 fourth- and fifth-grade students’ learning. Results indicate that when students are able to make connections between gaming strategies and intended mathematics, they may be more likely to transfer their mathematical understanding out of app. Results also indicate that games that have a balance of gaming and mathematical elements may help students make connections and improve transfer from in-app to out-of-app learning.
