Abstract

When English Language Learners Meet Native Speaker Teachers: Collision of Cultures
ABSTRACT
ELL children are expected to adjust and perform in schools. However, mainstream culture in order to enhance relevant communication and learning must also examine itself.
An action research project was designed for 27 elementary school teachers. In the first experience, the teachers created a concrete autobiography to share with their classmates; and, in the second experience, the teachers shared a 15 minute class taught in an unfamiliar language. Each experience was followed by a reflection paper, and the teachers’ reactions’ were compiled. Results indicate that the teachers stepped out of their personal boxes, felt open-minded, and learned ways to make ELLs more supported in their classrooms.
