Abstract

This paper will present an analysis of the past 15 years of research related to transgender and gender-nonconforming youth in K-12 schools in the United States. The author will present common themes in the literature as well as gaps and suggestions for future research. By applying a queer pedagogical lens to the body of research, the author suggests that current research around transgender and gender non-conforming youth in K-12 schools focuses more on crisis management rather than ways in which schools can disrupt gendered structures. The author suggests focusing on educators committed to queer pedagogy in future research in order to inform school policies and practices.
