Providing Special Educators With Opportunities to Increase Intercultural Sensitivity and Global-Mindedness

Sun, April 15, 2:45 to 4:15pm, Park Central Hotel New York, Floor: Mezzanine Level, Park I Room

Abstract

Special educators need to be equipped to teach and support students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Besides preparing them through the use of coursework and fieldwork, research suggested that providing educators with international experiences could have an impact on their intercultural sensitivity and openness to cultural diversity. The purpose of this presentation was to share a unique study abroad program. Twelve special education teacher candidates participated in the program. Participants observed inclusive schools, interviewed policy makers, and learned strategies to support students with disabilities in inclusive classrooms and their parents. Cultural activities and free explorations were also included. Participants not only incorporated what they had learned to improve their teaching practice, but also had new perspectives of students from diverse backgrounds.
