Assessment systems may influence academic performance through self-regulated learning (SRL) and participation in scheduled learning activities, which previously have been reported to jointly contribute to academic performance. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate differences in average scores of and interrelations between SRL, participation and average grades of first-year medical students under two assessment systems: i) a conjunctive lower stakes, lower performance standard (old) assessment system (n = 648) and ii) a compensatory higher stakes, higher performance standard (new) assessment system (n = 529).
Results indicated higher academic performance under the new assessment system. This higher performance seemed to result from higher SRL and participation, since relations between SRL, participation and academic performance were similar across both assessment systems.
