Sat, April 14, 10:35am to 12:05pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore teachers’ perspectives on the inclusion of student voice in the secondary science classroom. Semi-structured interviews with ten middle and high school science teachers will be used to collect data about teacher perceptions of student voice. The interviews will be transcribed and coded through an inductive analysis utilizing principles of grounded theory to see what generalizations emerge from systematic comparative analysis. Including the student voice in the classroom has benefits for science teaching and learning. However, for student voice to be included, teachers must support this initiative. Therefore, this study is important because it will explore advantages and limitations teachers see with allowing students a voice and involving them in their classrooms.
