Let's Talk About Race: Minoritized Youth and Critical Race Pedagogy

Sun, April 15, 8:15 to 9:45am, Millennium Broadway New York Times Square, Floor: Eighth Floor, Gallery 8

Abstract

This qualitative paper seeks to elevate critical race pedagogy (CRP), a curriculum aimed at strengthening the racial consciousness of young people. This teacher-researcher documents how students experience an out-of-school learning context, a teacher pipeline program with the aims of promoting the teaching profession among students of color, centered on the tenets of CRP. A curriculum focused on CRP allowed students to move toward an institutional analysis of racism, confront dominant narratives about America, interrogate the function of institutionalized racism in schools, and offer a space for youth to talk about race and racism in their lives. The author concludes with a critical self-reflection on the intricacies of moving from theory to practice with CRP as a teacher-researcher.
