An Issue of Access: Investigating the Lack of Underrepresented Minorities at STEM-Intensive Institutions

Sat, April 14, 2:15 to 3:45pm, New York Marriott Marquis, Floor: Fifth Floor, Westside Ballroom Salon 1

Abstract

The purpose of this study was threefold. First, it sought to determine if URM students are underrepresented at institutions with heavier STEM emphases relative to institutions emphasizing other programs. This study then investigated the characteristics of these STEM-intensive institutions that represent barriers to access for URM students. Finally, this study provided preliminary evidence suggesting the positive effect of higher institutional STEM emphasis on STEM bachelor degree completion among URM students. The ultimate, long-term intention of this study is to provide the foundation for future research into the implications of these findings, specifically how institutional STEM emphasis influences URM STEM persistence and why a lack of access to STEM-intensive institutions may function as a contributor to the existing STEM attainment gap.
