In Roundtable Session: Research on Mentoring Initiatives
Abstract
As universities strive to provide students with equitable educational opportunities, a diverse array of options which may include mentoring programs should be offered to students to ensure personal educational success and collaboration with peers and faculty. This paper discusses peer mentors’ perspectives of an education doctoral (EdD) peer mentoring program implemented in a mid-sized public university. Peer mentors were interviewed about their perceptions of the peer mentoring program and their experiences as mentors. Four themes were discovered during the interviews related the following topics: mentor-mentee relationships, future plans, mentee support, and mentor benefits. Results indicate that mentors believe the peer mentoring program is helpful for their mentees and beneficial to their own personal and professional development.
