This research focuses on conceptualization of vocational expertise and excellence by examining the nature of generic knowledge and skills and the acquisition of knowledge in formal and informal learning environments. The research builds on a large interview study (N=119) in the discipline of educational sciences and VET. According to results, future studies in the field of VET will need to illuminate the range and weight of different aspects of cognitive, emotional, and social factors in expertise development. Moreover, the responsibility areas between the wide range of stakeholders in the context of apprenticeship training should be redefined to support intentional workplace learning but also integrating learning environments closer together to support apprentices’ holistic competence development.
