Students' Perceptions of Supportive School Climate for Student Voice and Participation: Effects on Future Participation

Abstract

Schools matter significantly to the quality of students’ learning experiences and outcomes, yet most prior research has been variable-centered while the results from person-centered statistical analyses are easier to grasp for most people. This study examined profiles of Scandinavian students’ perceptions of school contexts as valuing students’ contributions to discussions and participation and how these are linked to indicators of emergent participatory citizenship. In particular, the effects on students’ willingness to participate in a range of civic and political activities were examined in multilevel regression analyses that account for student- and school-level confounders. The results provide leverage points for designing schools that have the capacity to nurture active citizens for democracies.
