The Impact of College Planning on Freshman GPA

Fri, April 13, 2:15 to 3:45pm, New York Hilton Midtown, Floor: Third Floor, Americas Hall 1-2 - Exhibit Hall

Abstract

The transition from middle to high school is challenging for many students. In the ninth grade, students often struggle academically. Low grades have a negative impact on academic progress and students who struggle academically in grade nine have an increased chance of dropping out of high school. These negative consequences are particularly significant for students from low socio-economic backgrounds. School counselors can assist with the ninth grade transition by supporting students to create meaningful goals that connect current educational achievement with future aspirations. The hypothesis states that planning for college will have a positive impact on academic success for students in grade nine, even when accounting for socio-economic status. The results of the study supported the hypothesis.
